Happy Snow Day Southold!
Highway department crews were in at 0300 when we started our salt and sand operations, we have covered all roads with a treatment of salt and sand mix and are allowing that to dwell while we move to the next phase of the storm operations. There was some mixing during the first hour of the storm which has led to some slippery spots with icing under the snow. Highway Operators are adjusting ballast in the trucks and will be starting plow routes beginning at 0800 focusing on the local arterial roads first. While there is an accumulated plow-able snow on the roadways, the current forecast is for snow to continue until 1100 with heavier rates of 1-2” per hour with poor visibility and increasing winds. If you do not need to travel or your travel can be delayed please do so. If you do need to travel, please give our drivers and equipment plenty of room to operate and do not follow closely. Should anyone need to reach the Highway Department for non-emergency situations we can be called at (631) 765-3140.
Be well and be safe,
Dan Goodwin, Superintendent of Highways
